Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival Medan – Tangkahan

A long ride of approximately 5.5. hrs, partly through plantations, to Tangkahan. To reach our hotel we have to cross the river on a rackety ferry and wade through the water. This is real jungle!

Our accommodation is run by local people and has a superb position at the junction of two rivers. The local Batak people have come to the conclusion that it is in their interest as well to preserve the forest and, aided by a foundation, they started this tourism project. You will be welcomed here with real warmth. It’s lovely to swim in the river or just listen to the sounds of the jungle from the terrace in front of your bungalow.

    Accommodation: Linea Resort(Standard Room)

  • Day 2: Tangkahan

Today you go for a special trekking through the jungle. You will get an interesting explanation about the plants and animals that live here. Tired of the trekking you go “tubing” on a tire back to the hotel.

    Meals: Breakfast
    Accommodation: Linea Resort(Standard Room)

  • Day 3: Bukit Lawang

To get to Gunung Leuser National Park we need a jeep to go off road, as the road is very bad. It takes approximately. 3 hours to reach the hotel, which is situated at the border of the jungle. This is the place of the famous viewing platform where Orang Utans can often be seen but this is not guaranteed. Every morning and afternoon these primates are fed and it is quite an experience to witness that.

    Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Bukit Lawang Cottage(Orang Utan Room)

  • Day 4: Bukit Lawang

Every morning and afternoon, the Orang Utans are fed and it’s a great experience to see this. Because Orang Utans have no natural enemies they are naturally curious. After breakfast you’ll visit the Orang Utans. You walk upstream along the banks of the river and cross over with a traditional canoe. Then it goes up into the jungle to the feeding place of Orang Utans, where you can watch these beautiful primates. To make it even more exciting you then go further into the park through a more difficult route to find more Orang Utans and other monkeys in the jungle. In the afternoon you can visit the town or just relax in or around the hotel.

    Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Bukit Lawang Cottage(Orang Utan Room)

  • Day 5: Berastagi

Passing coconut oil- and rubber plantations you will drive to Berastagi. At an altitude of 1300 m. it has a pleasant cool climate. Berastagi is famous for its fruits and vegetables. This is the place to try some of these exotic delicacies.

    Meals: Breakfast
    Accommodation: Danau Toba Cottage(Standard Room)

  • Day 6: Berastagi

The town is surrounded by two volcanoes and offers great views to both. You have the option of an ‘easy’ 3 hour walk or a strenuous day hike for experienced hikers. Another option is to relax in the natural hot springs!

    Meals: Breakfast
    Accommodation: Danau Toba Cottage(Standard Room)

  • Day 7-9: Lake Toba

On the way to Lake Toba you will visit a traditional Karo Batak village and the Sipiso-piso waterfall. At the end of the day we reach Prapat from where we take the public ferry to the peninsula of Tuktuk, where our hotel is. Seated in front of your room you have a lovely view over the smooth lake and the mountains behind it. At night the lights of Prapat shine invitingly across the water. You will have two days here to look around. Rent a bike and visit the traditional villages of Tomok and Simanindo. The terrain is flat and the climate cool. This is a good place for treks as well. The rough mountainous interiors hide various traditional villages.Try not to miss a dinner with traditional Batak songs. The Batak are renowned throughout all Indonesia for their singing voices and cheerful nature.
