Itinerary

  • Day 1: Maumere Arrival

    On arrival in Flores you spend the night in a nice hotel on the beach, just outside Maumere. Depending on your time of arrival there may be some time left for leisure activities; snorkel in the clear blue waters or just relax.

  • Day 2: Maumere

    The morning is free to spend. In the afternoon there will be a traditional dance performance in Watublapi.

  • Day 3: Moni

    Today is reserved for a beautiful tour through the mountains. The village of Sikka, situated on the south coast, is one of the first places of Portuguese influence and Catholic missionary activity in Flores. Besides the beautiful, with local ikat motifs decorated, Portuguese church from 1899, Sikka is still one of Flores’ most important and famous weaving centres. You will stop by a beautiful white sandy beach, named Paga. Here is a local restaurant where you can have lunch but lunch is also possible in the furtherdown Wolowaru. Wolowaru is a place for organic cashew nut processing which are harvested at the eastern part of Flores. The processing involves a lot of female workers from several villages. You can see the processing from peeling till packing. We continue our way to Moni, where we arrive in the late afternoon. Moni will be our starting point for a visit to the Kelimutu.

  • Day 4: Kelimutu and Nggela

    An early start to the Kelimutu volcano; you might have a chance to see a spectacular sunrise. From the parking place it is a 45 minute walk to the viewing point.Bare in mind to bring warm clothes because it can still be cold in the early morning. It is a mysterious place with it’s three lakes constantly changing colour.

    After breakfast you can join an optional walk of approximately 1,5 hours around Moni. The walk goes down hill and you will walk through different traditional weaving villages.

    After lunch you will pay a visit to the beautiful village of Nggela. Nggela is one of the few villages in the Lio district with well maintained houses built in traditional Lio style. In the most important house they keep their ritual treasures. Nggela is also known for traditional ikat weaving. Only woman are allowed to do so. In Nggela you will also have the opportunity to drink a coffee with one of the weaving ladies. The way to Nggela goes via Jopu, where you can still find a few traditional Sao Ria houses. For those interested you can choose to walk to Nggela from Jopu instead of driving. This has to be discussed with the tourleader.

  • Day 5: Riung

    You drive through a beautiful valley towards Riung, situated on the north coast of Flores. You’ll be amazed by the variety of landscapes Flores has to offer. During the tour we stop to walk and to have lunch on the beach. In the late afternoon we arrive in Riung, a small fishermen-village where hardly any other tourists come; a unique experience.

  • Day 6: Riung

    Today you go by boat to the National Park, with its 17 coral islands. The place is well-known for its reefs, tropical fish and thousands of flying dogs (you can see them from quite close by)! Feel free to snorkel around; the underwater world is really beautiful here. For lunch you will enjoy a fish-barbecue and fresh coconut-juice prepared by one of our cooks. A delightful day!

  • Day 7: Bajawa

    Today you leave for Bajawa. On the way you stop by a viewpoint, which offers an astonishing view over the coral islands we visited yesterday. Around lunchtime we arrive in Soa. This village is famous for its natural thermal springs, heated by a volcano in the neighbourhood. Here you will have some time to take a nice warm bath in one of the natural pools. In the late afternoon we arrive in Bajawa, a little town surrounded by volcanoes, situated about 1200 meters above sea-level. Bring some warm clothes, because the nights here can be quite chilly.

  • Day 8: Bajawa

    Bajawa is a very traditional village, ancestor worshipping plays an important role in local life. Today you trek in the beautiful surroundings of Bajawa, from village to village through a variety of landscapes. There are numerous traditional villages around, it’s like the place is forgotten by time. The local people here are amazingly friendly. The hilly landscape, dotted by bamboo-forest, offers some stunning viewpoints over the south coast of Flores You will be invited by friendly locals to sip tea inside their homes. A local guide will come with you to explain everything about the habits and customs of the Ngada people. From time to time you have to climb and descend during the trek, but you will be rewarded by astonishing views over the area.

  • Day 9: Ruteng

    Today promises a beautiful ride. On the way to Ruteng you will see people working in the countryside and stop by places where the local drink Arak is made. Ranamese means “big lake” in the local language and is not far from Ruteng. This 11,5 ha sized lake was a crater which eventually created deep-slope bank of water. The lake is surrounded by rainforest and is home to endemic birds.

  • Day 10: Labuan Bajo

    Ruteng, the capital of Manggarai area, is surrounded by rice fields. It’s the most fertile part of the island. In Manggarai you will certainly notice the impressive Lingko fields. With their round, spider-web structure, these pieces of land are the unique eye-catchers in Manggarai. In the morning we leave by car and then go for a 1 ½ hour stroll around the small villages and rice fields, of course accompanied by a local guide who will know about this area.

  • Day 11: Labuan Bajo(Rinca)

    In the early morning we leave for Rinca, one of the few places where the magnificent Komodo Dragon lives. We will stroll around the isle that offers astonishing views. In the afternoon there will be some time left to go snorkeling by one of the other islands. Around dusk we will go back to Labuan Bajo.

  • Day 12: Labuan Bajo Departure

    Transfer to the airport.
