Experience the stunning beauty and heartwarming friendliness of green Sumatra. In North Sumatra, the Orang Utans live in the steaming jungle of Gunung Leuser National Park.

This short Sumatra adventure trip is a very good introduction to beauty that Sumatra has to offer. Apart from getting up close with the magnificent primates you will also learn about all other plants & animals the forest habitats. Traveling per off road jeep you’ll conquer the muddy roads and cross-rivers.

  • Day 1: Arrival Medan – Bukit Lawang

Pick up at the airport of Medan. Passing coconut oil and rubber plantations, you drive about 4.5 hours on a partly bad road, to the hotel on the edge of the jungle. This is the place of the famous viewing platform where Orang Utans can often be seen but this is not guaranteed.

Accommodation: at Bukit Lawang Cottage(Orang Utan Room)

  • Day 2: Bukit Lawang

Every morning and afternoon, the orang utans are fed and it’s a great experience to see this. Because Orang Utans have no natural enemies they are naturally curious. After breakfast you’ll visit the Orang Utans. You walk upstream along the banks of the river and cross over with a traditional canoe. Then it goes up into the jungle to the feeding place of Orang Utans, where you can watch these beautiful primates. To make it even more exciting you then go further into the park through a more difficult route to find more Orang Utans and other monkeys in the jungle. In the afternoon you can visit the town or just relax in or around the hotel.

  • Day 3: Bukit Lawang – Tangkahan

With a jeep we go off road. In approximately three hours, we drive on challenging roads to the Gunung Leuser National Park. To get there we need to cross, using a primitive ferry or (depending on the water level) wade through it. This is the real jungle! Our accommodation is managed by local people and is beautifully situated at the confluence of two rivers. The local Batak people have realized that it is in their interests to protect the rainforest and with outside help, they started this tourism project. Enjoy the heartwarming welcome.
